Dessert Island Discs with Sarah Hill...

What a lovely time we had in the Pulse HR studio today! My guest was the delightfully entertaining Sarah Hill who is Assistant Services Manager at Watford & Three Rivers Trust (W3RT). She came in to tell us all about Getting Together Clubs (www.gettingtogether.org) which provide weekly meetups in Watford and surrounding areas for over 55s and beyond. We talked about how to mitigate the negative effects of loneliness and isolation in old age, what you can possibly do to prepare for getting older, and the benefits of reminiscence. In the second hour we talked about her career path and how volunteering provided the boost she needed to learn skills that could take her back into work after having kids. We also played some of her favourite songs – she’s a true 80s child! I have to say we had a real laugh today. Join us by pressing play…

Jane Johnson is the founder of Random Café, the Watford outpost of the The Real Junkfood Project. Her aim is to feed bellies not bins, by using supermarket food that is past the sell-by date to prepare culinary masterpieces -including 'posh toast' and yummy cakes- at their weekly pop-up cafes around Watford, where they are sold on a 'pay as you feel' basis. We talked about what motivates her, her goals for Random Café (including getting a van and finding a permanent premises) and how she handles a fulltime job and 3 teenagers as well as this MASSIVE passion project.
